Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) related to National Educational Policy (NEP)
The Government of Karnataka is keen on implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) from this academic year (i.e.,2021-22) onwards and has passed a Government order to this effect. Indian Academy Degree College – Autonomous, (IADCA) Bangalore has implemented the NEP from this academic year and the same is communicated to the parents and students.

It is the Educational Policy announced by the Government of India in the year 2020 and adopted by the Government of Karnataka. It is the first state to adopt in the year 2021. The government of India has notified NEP2020 on July 29th 2020 based on Dr. Kasturirangan Committee’s Report. The Government of Karnataka had constituted a Task force to suggest an implementation Framework for NEP 2020.The Government through the NEP 2020 would like to bring back the ancient system combined with the integration of modern technology and curbing commercialization of education in the country through implementation of NEP 2020. This apart, promoting Indian Languages and protect the culture and ethos of Indian values is one of the objectives of this policy. The Government of Karnataka has accepted NEP with some modifications it will be implemented across all colleges and universities in Karnataka from October 2021. Under NEP, all the undergraduate degree programmes will be of four years duration. It will also have multiple exit options for the students. It is based on credit system. A student who completes all the 4 years will become a graduate with an Honours Degree. A student who completes 3 years of degree will get a degree, a student completing 2 years can exit with a Diploma and a student who completes 1 year can exit with a certificate. As per the order of the Government of Karnataka, under NEP there are Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC). Languages come under the AECC.A student has to take two languages each semester. However, any student who has studied Kannada at any stage during his tenure of studies from primary to class 12/PUC will have to take Kannada as the 1st Language and can choose the 2nd language from a bouquet of languages like English, Hindi, French etc. However, any student who has not at all studied Kannada until class 12/PUC should study functional Kannada as one of the languages in one semester. IADCA will provide extra support to such students in terms of special classes, additional lectures and other support.
You will have to study Kannada and the other language of your choice for first FOUR semesters.
With an idea of providing knowledge from other streams, Open Electives Courses (OEC) are offered by various departments within the college. These courses are generic in nature, introducing you to some of the interesting topics associated with a field of study. Normally, the OEs will be only of one semester duration. You allowed to choose any open elective from any departments but subject to the availability. In fact, it is difficult operationally to run all the OEs. It will be based on the demand for OEs opted by the students. However, if for any reason, an OE is not offered to any student, he will be given second choice to select any other OE from the available options.
Yes, a student may choose any Open Elective as per his choice every semester, however in special cases, there may be a pre-requisite to choose an open elective
These are courses that are offered by a department to those students who have opted to study their field as core subjects. Students will have to study all these core subjects.
As per the NEP, the committee identified a gap between the current state of Learning Outcomes and what is required should be bridged. In this regard, more emphasis on Skills and Values from preschools to Higher Education is the key of NEP2020. The Skill Enhancement Course (SECs) are meant to improve the skill levels of the students in various domains. Few examples are Digital Fluency, Health and Wellbeing, Environmental studies, Yoga, cultural activities etc.
These are courses that are offered by the department to the students from semester 5 to 8. Students are allowed to choose any Discipline Elective of their choice out of the options provided to them and in the field or interest of their specialisation. For details, you may refer to the detailed curriculum of the specific Programme.

NEP – 2020 is implemented from the Academic Year 2021 – 22, as per the norms and guidelines of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) and Bengaluru North University.
